Screen saver · free

When your computer sits idle, let it show the valley's board instead of a blank screen: what's open, what's on, and what the roads are doing. Move the mouse and you're right back where you left off.

The Snoqualmie Towne Crier logo โ€” a crier with a scroll and horn

What it does

The live board, the moment your computer goes quiet.

Full screenThe same board as the TV version, edge to edge, with nothing else on the screen.Live
QuietNo flap sounds, and your screen still turns off and sleeps on its usual schedule. The board never holds it awake.Silent
Out of your wayAny key, click or real mouse movement ends it at once. A bumped desk doesn't. On Windows it runs in an Edge profile of its own, so your everyday browser, passwords and sign-ins are never touched.Private
OfflineOn Windows, if the internet is down it shows the Towne Crier sign and tries again every 30 seconds, rather than an error page.Patient

Windows 10 and 11

Two minutes, no installer.

  1. Download TowneCrier-ScreenSaver.zip (430 KB).
  2. Before you unzip it, right-click the ZIP, choose Properties, tick Unblock near the bottom if it's there, and click OK. Windows marks everything you download; this clears the mark for every file inside.
  3. Right-click the ZIP again and choose Extract All.
  4. Move TowneCrier.scr to a folder you'll keep. A “Towne Crier” folder in Documents is fine. Windows runs the screen saver from wherever the file sits, so don't leave it in Downloads if you ever tidy that folder.
  5. Right-click TowneCrier.scr and choose Install. On Windows 11, click Show more options first if Install isn't in the menu. Screen Saver Settings opens with TowneCrier chosen.
  6. Pick how many minutes to Wait and click OK. Click Preview to see it straight away.

The Settings… button in that same window lets you show a different board (your own venue's, if you run one) and try it on the spot.

If Windows warns you

It isn't code-signed yet. Here's what that means.

If you see “Windows protected your PC”, click More info, then Run anyway. Windows shows that for any new program it hasn't seen many times, and this one is new.

If your PC has Smart App Control turned on, Windows may refuse to run it at all. Please leave Smart App Control on; a signed version will be posted on this page.

Nothing is hidden. The ZIP includes the complete source code and the one-line build that made it, using only what already ships with Windows. To check your copy is ours, open PowerShell in the folder and run Get-FileHash .\TowneCrier.scr; the answer should match the fingerprint below, which is also in the ZIP.

Mac · macOS 13 and newer

On a Mac, a free web screen saver does the job.

There's no Mac download from us, because a good tool already exists: WebViewScreenSaver, free and open source, which shows any web page as your screen saver. We didn't write it and it isn't notarized by Apple, so macOS asks you to confirm it once.

  1. Install it. If you use Homebrew, run the line below in Terminal. Otherwise download WebViewScreenSaver-2.5.zip from its releases page, unzip it, double-click WebViewScreenSaver.saver, and install it for this user.
    brew install --cask webviewscreensaver
  2. Open System Settings → Screen Saver and choose WebViewScreenSaver, under Other at the end of the list. If macOS says it can't verify it, click Done, open Privacy & Security, scroll to the bottom and click Open Anyway beside WebViewScreenSaver, then confirm with Open when you come back.
  3. Click Options…. Remove any address already in the list, add the one below, and set its time to -1, which means “stay on this page”.
    https://agents.itmedic.ai/tv?saver=1
  4. Choose when it starts: System Settings → Lock Screen → Start Screen Saver when inactive.

Keep ?saver=1 on the end of the address: it keeps the board silent and lets your Mac put its display to sleep as usual. On macOS 26 Tahoe, if the Options button does nothing, quit System Settings and open it again; WebViewScreenSaver's own notes call that a macOS bug. On macOS 11 and 12 the same settings are under System Preferences → Desktop & Screen Saver.

The cuckoo clock instead

Rather have the cuckoo clock? Give either screen saver its address.

The Towne Crier Cuckoo Clock makes a screen saver too: the clock in the valley, keeping time and putting on its show on the hour and the half, with what's on in Snoqualmie along the bottom. As a screen saver it plays silently.

  1. Windows. Set up the screen saver as above, then click Settings…. Under Show this board, replace the address with the one below, click Try it now to see it, then OK.
  2. Mac. In WebViewScreenSaver's Options…, use the address below in place of the board's, with its time still set to -1.
https://agents.itmedic.ai/cuckoo?saver=1

Keep ?saver=1 on the end: it keeps the clock silent, with no buttons and no pointer on screen, and lets your computer put its display to sleep as usual. To go back to the board on Windows, click Put the Towne Crier board back in Settings.

What it collects

Nothing from your computer.

Both versions simply open the board's public page, or the clock's, marked as a screen saver. For a screen saver those pages load no analytics, never ask for a tap and never keep your display awake. Nor do they set our device tag: a screen saver can never answer a cookie notice, so it is never tagged, and the board knows only how many screen savers are connected at any moment. The Windows version keeps a short log on your own PC, in %LOCALAPPDATA%\TowneCrierScreenSaver, for when you ask us for help; it goes nowhere else. Privacy details.

Changed your mind?

Taking it off is one setting.

Windows: Screen Saver Settings → Screen saver: (None) → OK. Then delete TowneCrier.scr and the folder %LOCALAPPDATA%\TowneCrierScreenSaver.

Mac: choose any other screen saver. To remove WebViewScreenSaver entirely, run brew uninstall --cask webviewscreensaver, or delete WebViewScreenSaver.saver from the Screen Savers folder in your Library.

Run a board of your own?

Your board can be the screen saver too.

Every board has its own TV address, and both screen savers take any address. Put yours in with ?saver=1 on the end, and every computer in your office shows your board when nobody's at it.

Microsoft, Windows, Edge, Mac and macOS are trademarks of their owners, and no endorsement of the Towne Crier is implied by any of them. WebViewScreenSaver is an independent open-source project (Apache 2.0); we point to it because it works, and have no connection to it.
