Reporting landscape notes — 2026

NERIS replaced NFIRS
NFIRS retired Feb 1, 2026 — NERIS (USFA + UL FSRI) is now the sole national fire incident system. It is API-first (REST, public docs, entity accounts), which finally makes national reporting a usable dashboard source.
NEMSIS v3.5 / WEMSIS
Washington ePCRs flow to WEMSIS (ImageTrend, run by DOH) within 48 hours — mandatory for all licensed services (WAC 246-976-455). Dashboards pull from the ePCR vendor’s reporting layer, not the registry.
Most EMS SaaS APIs are partner-gated
ESO, ImageTrend, ZOLL, TeleStaff, CAD vendors: integration exists but is arranged per contract. Open APIs: NERIS, First Due, Mark43, Vector Scheduling, Active911, Samsara/Geotab/Fleetio, NWS, AirNow.
Start where the data flows freely
Crawl: CAD extract + open feeds. Walk: ePCR warehouse + checks/scheduling. Run: near-real-time status, hospital and HEMS integration.

Governance & compliance guardrails

HIPAA
Wallboards and shared views show aggregates and operational status only — no patient identifiers. PHI stays in the agency’s ePCR and its own Microsoft tenant, never ours; BAAs with every processor; row-level security and audit logging in the BI layer.
CJIS
CAD feeds that include law-enforcement data are cut to fire and EMS incidents, law-enforcement fields removed, before ingestion.
Controlled substances
Narcotics counts/audits surface as status and exceptions, never balances by name; chain-of-custody remains in the tracking system of record.
Data quality
We build every card to state its refresh cadence, and a stale feed to gray out rather than show old numbers as current.

About this demo: an ITMedic concept build. Every figure is simulated, and every agency, hospital, place, incident and person is invented. The systems named in the source map are the ones common in US fire and EMS.
